Bluegrass Basset Rescue, Inc.

All About Bluegrass Basset Rescue, Inc Bluegrass Basset Rescue, Inc., was founded in 2002 by Pat Workman, Susan Intessimone and Pat Ludlam as the first organization in Kentucky dedicated solely to saving, rehabilitating, and rehoming basset hounds. Prior to that time, various all-breed rescues, rescues in other states, and Susan herself were pulling bassets from shelters, accepting them from owners, and rescuing them from stray situations. The rescue is a non-profit organization as defined by IRS code 501(c)(3) and operates through fundraising, donations and adoption fees. The inspiration for the rescue came from the first basset Susan rescued in Kentucky in April 2001. The Animal Control officers in Trigg County, KY, pulled up to her house on Good Friday and said they had a basset for her. Rufus, an 8 year old, had been turned over by his owner at the Christian County Animal Shelter with the words, “I’m tired of him.” He was dirty, scared, and thin, and went immediately into the kitchen to fall asleep under the table. Time proved Rufus was a really good dog and eventually he was adopted by the Singletons of Arkansas. Sadly, Rufus passed away in his sleep a few years after his adoption, but we know the few years he had as a Singleton were the best he ever had! His ability to overcome whatever had befallen him during the first 8 years of his life and to go on and become part of a new family inspired Susan to continue to rescue dogs despite not having funds or the necessities these days of other volunteers and a website. The rescuing went on and evolved into Bluegrass Basset Rescue, Inc., when Susan formed a friendship with Pat Workman, who adopted Hank, a bagel (beagle-basset mix.)
